Amazing Wildlife - The European Red Squirrel

As a wildflife fan, I was pretty excited at the possibility of seeing the native Red Squirrel during my time in the UK. With the introduction of the Grey Squirrel from Northern America, their numbers have sadly diminished drastically. We searched all over. I thought we may have seen some when we were in Donagahadee, Northern Island, alas, it wasn't meant to be.

It wasn't until I got to Germany that I came across my first Red Squirrel.

I was staying with a friend in Hamburg and as we sat on the deck, we spotted a bright red squirrel prance joyfully across the grass.  Well, my interest was peaked and we were now constantly on alert for the little creatures.

At the end of my trip, we still hadn't come across the elusive squirrel so in a last ditch effort, we sat in my friend's sisters backyard and put out walnuts then waited patiently. Again we were not to be rewarded. As we were leaving, my friend suggested we walk through the trees a short distance from the apartment and we were immediately greeted by their bright fluffiness.

Simply adorable to watch, they played, leaping from tree to tree, chasing each other. Nibbling on twigs, and when it was all too much, taking a nap.

Love these little guys. I hope they can get the Grey population under control in the UK so that the native Reds can flourish.

  As a local Sydneysider, I never get tired of this walk or this view. Today I was thinking how incredible this would be for a visitor to our beautiful city. With my good friend, Russ, occasional walking guide and history enthusiast I had the fortunate pleasure of being transported back in time, experiencing London in quite a unique way. When I may have simply passed by oblivious to its significance, Russ pointed out a snippet and anecdote that made the walk a much more enjoyable experience. Things got messy in France under  King Louis XIV  around 1685 forcing The Huguenots (Protestants) to leave the country. Around 50,000 of them settled in England, around half in London and many around the Spitalfields streets we walked through today. These homes were built in the 18th century. As silk weavers and clockmakers, the Huguenot's homes were a combination of workshop and living space. Juvenile Eastern Whipbird drops by for a visit

  My walk on Thursday, went from Lindfield down Symons Track, under Fullers Bridge and toward Chatswood golf course. On the little trail before the golf course, I heard a scurrying in the bushes and a little muffled squelching.  I saw two Whipbirds amongst the brush. The regular blue-headed Whipbird I had seen frequently but I have never seen this brown coloured one. So I quickly photographed it then once home used my Merlin app to identify it as a Juvenile Eastern Whipbird. The adult Eastern Whipbird peers at me through the bushes. I always get excited when I see a new variety or a different version of a bird.  I get a lot of ridicule from serious bird people but I hope I never lose the thrill of these new discoveries.
