I recently spent some time wandering around at The Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. I was fascinated by the colour and shapes of the flowers. They are quite distinctive. Thankfully, there was a flier identifying many of the natives along the way so I am able to name some of them. These are some of my favourites. Anigozanthos Manglesii - Red and Green Kangaroo Paw Hardenbergia Violacea Anigozanthos Manglesii - Red and Green Kangaroo Paw Anigozanthos Flavidus - Red Kangaroo Paw Angiozanthos Bush Diamond Kangaroo Paw Pimlea Physodes or Qualup Bell Angiozanthos Bush Diamond Kangaroo Paw BEE HOTEL Unlike honey bees, native solitary bees like to nest in wood burrows. Females will nest alone and stockpile the cells with pollen and honey. How cool is this Bee Hotel? NATIVE WILDL

Canberra Birdlife

This Eastern Yellow Robin sat here on this branch in the Eucalypt Forest at Tinbinbilla for quite a while before I noticed it and a even longer whilst I photographed it. Quite extraordinary.  I'm not a bird photographer by any means but I do enjoy watching them interact with each other and their reactions to me. Like this gal. I'm certain that she is scowling at me. Staring me away from her nest. And this Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is definitely keeping an eye on my as he eats his lunch. This Wattle Bird is very noisy here at The National Australian Botanic Gardens I'm not quite sure what this Red-Browed Finch is up to. If you know, do drop a comment down below. These images were taken from a recent trip to The Australian National Botanic Gardens , Tidbinbilla and the  Jerrabomberra Wetlands in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT). I'm learning a great deal about patience. There is much standing around, observing and waiting. I don't always have the time

Top Five Things To Do In Canberra for Art, Nature and Wildlife lovers

Image
Long known as a place of government and little else, Australia's capital is not usually on the top of people's bucket list. If you haven't been in a while, I think you'll find it has a much-improved vibrance and if you are an art, nature and wildlife lover as I am, Canberra has a lot to offer. Here are five of my favourite spots from my recent trip.  1. TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE What I absolutely love about Tidbinbilla is being able to walk around with the wildlife. Occasionally an Eastern Grey will pop up its head in curiosity with a "yep, another human", then busily go back to the task at hand. This task being nibbling on the grass or fussing over a joey trying to get back into the pouch. I realise they are abundant and that a "management plan" is in place to control the population but for the vast majority of city dwellers, including myself, it is still a pleasant novelty. The reserve is nestled in the Tidbinbilla Valley, just a  short drive  fro

Cuddly Koala and Wild Kangaroo in Canberra

TIDBINBILLA On my recent trip to the ACT, I was delighted to visit Tidbinbilla Reserve for the first time. Recently returned to the reserve after being evacuated during the bushfires, it was wonderful to see the animals happily enjoying their surrounds. Whilst the kangaroo and their joeys roam freely, the endangered Koala are surrounded by a predator-proof fence in a transitioning enclosure as part of the Tidbinbilla breeding program. Here is a sneak peak.  Enjoy. N x THE AUTHOR My Curious Camera is professional portrait photographer, Nina Beilby.
